Our chapter is monitoring a number of key issues this legislative session.
Safe Sleep: Legislation was filed this session to require all licensed child care facilities to implement a safe sleep policy in accordance with the safe sleep recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Two bills were filed specifically focused on this issue, while language to require this was also amended to a number of other bills. Ultimately, SB 341 was passed by the Missouri General Assembly and is awaiting action from the Governor. SB 341 is an omnibus children’s bill that includes the safe sleep requirement, along with many other important issues for children.
Childproof Packing for Liquid Nicotine Containers: HB 531, filed by Representative Sheila Solon, requires liquid nicotine products to be sold in child-safe packaging. Dr. Jennifer Lowry, MOAAP Board Member, testified in both the House and Senate hearings in support of the bill. HB 531 was passed by the General Assembly, and is awaiting action from the Governor.
Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP): A number of bills were filed this session to create a PDMP for Missouri, which is the only state without such a program. Our chapter supports HB 130 as the preferred option. This issue continues to be debated in the legislature, and we are hopeful that it is passed this session.
